Mission Statement

To be obedient to God’s Word and, “Go into all the world and make disciples…” especially to the people and areas that are in most need of God’s mercy; prisoners, former prisoners, addicts, alcoholics, criminals, gang members and all at-risk youth and adults.

Vision Statement

Made To Be FREE Ministries believes that God’s Word will make you free. Free from criminal and addictive thinking and behavior that leads to bondage in a person’s life. We share our life experiences before and after allowing Jesus Christ to truly be Lord of our lives. We teach what we have learned; that if you learn to read, study, meditate on, memorize, and apply God’s Word to the situations and circumstances of your life, you will experience a miraculous transformation. You will truly be free in your entire being: spirit, soul and body.

THE MINISTRies

Johnny “Irish” Harvey spent over half his life in prisons throughout the country. Once a high-ranking member of the largest, most violent gang in the United States Prison System, Johnny was deemed one of the “worst of the worst” by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. He was classified as a threat to the safety and security of staff and inmates and placed in solitary confinement where he remained from 1995-1997.

Everything changed in 1996 when Johnny surrendered his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord placed the people and resources in his path to deliver, heal, provide for and restore Johnny’s life to what God originally intended for him to be. It started with a priest, Father Dave, that came back to the solitary confinement blocks every Tuesday afternoon to offer help to the men. Johnny met with Father Dave for the remaining time in solitary and received the guidance and encouragement he needed before being released back into general population.

Once back in population Johnny continued his “new walk” with the Lord by attending Mass, and all the classes and programs available to him to help him receive deliverance, healing and development. The Lord helped Johnny get clean and sober in September of 1997 and Johnny continues to be actively involved in Recovery. Johnny stepped down from the gang in 1998. God also used the classes and  programs the institutions offered to help Johnny correct his criminal and addictive thinking and behavior.

He learned and developed excellent communication and leadership skills and began applying all that he was learning to his life. He also began “unofficially” teaching all that he was learning to other residents who wanted to learn, but were unable to get in the programs yet.

Administrative and Security Staff began taking notice of the transformation that was evident in Johnny’s life and the positive impact he was having on the other inmates. They gave him a job as a Program Aid and began allowing him to teach classes, facilitate prayer groups, and organize and operate programs under the supervision of staff.

In April of 2018 Johnny was released after serving 32 years, 4 months and 27 days of continuous incarceration. Since then, Johnny has continued to transition all that he learned in prison into being a clean, sober, law abiding, pro-social member of society. He has been and continues to be a blessing to his family, community, the people he meets, and ultimately to God. He has taken all that he has learned and  experienced and founded Made To Be Free Ministries, a non-profit organization designed to help men, women, and children become free from the things that are keeping them from reaching their full potential and becoming who they were created to be – the absolute best versions of themselves.

Johnny shares in high schools, colleges, churches, treatment centers, and prisons throughout the country.

Our Mission Matters

I have witnessed first hand, that if men, women, and children are surrounded with positive influences, they respond to these influences in positive, productive, healthy ways in the vast majority of cases. They think positive, speak positive and develop good habits. On the flip side of that coin; if they are surrounded by negative influences, they respond in negative ways and think, speak, and develop negative behaviors.

For this reason, Our Mission Matters! We at Made To Be Free Ministries are on a mission to allow God to use us to change the hearts of men, women and children through His Grace, Mercy and Love. When we help God change the hearts of His children, they become the change – the positive influences of their environment!

I first witnessed this when I joined an Intensive Inpatient Therapeutic Community called, The New Life Program. This was a cell block that had been converted unto a drug and alcohol treatment center. Every inmate living in this cell block was in the program. The program was 6 months long, followed by 6 months of Out Patient After-Care. This community became our “village.” We learned tools that helped us address and abate the criminal and addictive thinking and behavior that led us to prison. We held each other accountable and governed ourselves. We not only benefited by living “law abiding” lives, the staff and corrections officers benefited as well. It was a peaceful, positive, healthy environment and we were responsible for keeping it that way. If a resident got out of line, he was held accountable. If he continued
to practice negative behavior, he was removed from the program.

I have witness other cell blocks and dormitories that have been designated as “Program/Educational Units,” and the environment in these living units is always conducive to rehabilitation. It only reinforces the fact that if we surround people with positive, healthy influences they are much more apt to learn and develop in a positive, healthy manner, and be better human beings.

"If you continue in My Word, you are truly My disciples;  and you will know the Truth, and the Truth will make you free."
